Microsoft Secures ‘Xbox 8’ Domains

Microsoft has secured ownership of multiple domains related to the term Xbox 8.
Back in May, Microsoft filed a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum to gain control over sites owned by a Chinese citizen named Cheng Juan. Now, Microsoft has won the dispute, giving the company control over Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org, in addition to various other Xbox related domains: XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com and XboxCompanion.com.

Xbox 8 was previously rumoured as a potential name for Microsoft’s next-generation console, joining codenames Loop and Durango.

Xbox 8 is an especially plausible name for the console considering Microsoft’s aggressive expansion of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Another oft-rumoured Xbox codename -- Xbox Infinity -- could also tie into the Xbox 8 name, as the symbol for infinity is, of course, an 8 on its side.

For now, Xbox 8 is nothing but a rumour, and it’s worth noting that Xbox8.com is currently held by a Chinese citizen and Microsoft has not yet attempted to obtain it.

We reached out to Microsoft regarding the domains and received the following statement: “Microsoft often acquires various domain names as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment.”
